Atlantic City
Before jet planes and air-conditioning, New Yorkers flocked to this Jersey Shore mecca by the millions to escape the heat. A higher-class alternative to Coney Island, Atlantic City boasted miles of boardwalk, giant resort hotels with bath houses and attractions like Young's Million-Dollar Pier, the Steel Pier, Steeplechase Pier and New Garden Pier. The high-resolution images here were scanned from giant 8x10 inch glass negatives, as well as multiple-plate panoramas. Click any thumbnail for a slideshow. This gallery has 126 images.
